MACARICO
The wine and our estate take their name from a district in the township of Barile, a village on the slopes of the Vulture volcano, a sub-area historically renowned for the quality of its wines, a true "cru" where our vineyards are located. The wine is made entirely from Aglianico grapes.
Appellation - Aglianico del Vulture DOC
Alcohol - 14°
Viticulture
The vineyard is located in the Macarico district of the township of Barile at 1650 feet above sea level; its exposure varies from south-southeast to south-southwest. It is planted with close to 10,00 vines per hectare (4000 vines per acre) and is cultivated with a low, Guyot-pruned training system. Cultivation techniques are traditional without herbicides and chemical fertilizers, and with the sole use of natural products against vine diseases.
Harvest
Entirely by hand, with the grapes picked into low packing cases during the first ten days of November; yields are seven tons per hectare (2 and 1/3 ton per acre).
Fermentation
A soft de-stemming with a manual selection of the destemmed grapes, spontaneous fermentation without the utilization of selected yeasts, and an 18 day maceration on the skins in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks.
Aging In 60 gallon oak barrels for 18 months - including the malolactic fermentation - in temperaturecontrolled cellars.
Bottle aging twelve months.
Tasting notes
Full ruby red, dense and luminous. Aromas of ripe red and black berry fruit with balsamic sensations. Rich on the palate, enveloping and persistent, an elegant structure supported by tannins of much finesse which promise long life.
